Social Media Character Limits: Complete 2025 Reference
Every social media platform enforces specific character or word limits. Staying within these limits ensures your content displays correctly and is not truncated.
Twitter/X: 280 characters per post (was 140 before 2017). Links count as 23 characters regardless of length (t.co shortening). Images, videos, and polls do not count toward the limit. Threads allow unlimited connected posts.
LinkedIn: Posts can be up to 3,000 characters. Articles (LinkedIn's long-form publishing) have no strict character limit but perform best between 1,000–2,000 words. Profile headlines are limited to 220 characters. About sections: 2,600 characters.
Instagram: Captions can be up to 2,200 characters, but only the first 125 characters display before the "more" cutoff. Bio: 150 characters. Username: 30 characters. Hashtags: up to 30 per post.
Facebook: Posts can be up to 63,206 characters (practically unlimited). However, engagement drops sharply after 80 characters — short posts perform dramatically better. Ad copy limits vary by placement: primary text is typically 125 characters recommended.
TikTok: Captions can be up to 2,200 characters but only ~150 characters display before the "more" button. Bio: 80 characters.
